Located in northern Worcester County, Athol, or “Tool Town,” was first settled in 1735. During the 1800s it quickly grew into a booming center of industry. Most of the factories have gone, but Athol remains a town invested in the economic growth and well-being of its citizens. The area features many new businesses, including the largest Market Basket in New England, an 8-screen movie theater, and a modern public library. For those interested in an active lifestyle, there are plenty of lakes, ponds, and hiking trails nearby, not to mention the local YMCA’s fantastic gym and indoor pool. Public schools serving the town include: Athol Community Elementary School, Athol-Royalston Middle School, and Athol High School.
