Boasting the title of largest community by area in Franklin County, New Salem is comprised of over 58 square miles of land and water. The population, however, is tiny – only about 1,000 full-time residents. That’s because most of New Salem is conservation land, which means plenty of outdoor activities. Bordered by the Quabbin Reservoir, families will find themselves surrounded by beautiful forests just made for hiking. New Salem is just a quick drive away from the shopping amenities found in Athol and Orange. Public schools serving the community include: the Swift River School and Ralph C. Mahar Regional School.
